| HIKE 2011 Helping Improve A Nature Reserve "Reserva Ejidal Benito Juárez" July 9 & 10 Every year since 2005 we have planned an adventure which we hope has proven memorable for the participants. This hike was different in the aspect that we had the opportunity to help La Reserva Ejidal Benito Juárez by painting signs referencing conservation. These signs will be located throughout the reserve for the benefit of visitors. We were assisted by guides, whose responsibility is the conservation and protection of the reserve. Hike participants arrived prepared with brushes and DEMATAC supplied the paint. La Reserva Ejidal Benito Juárez is located to the southeast of Lake Catemaco and borders La Reserva de la Biosfera – Los Tuxtlas. For this reason, and because of it's ecological importance, it is worth the effort to support it's efforts. Saturday morning we left Rancho Bahía Escondida by motor launch for the community of Benito Juárez. Once there, we divided into two groups. Group 1 took a two hour guided tour of the Reserve, while group 2 began painting the signs in the communal building of the reserve. Upon their return, group 1 finished the signs, while group 2 took the tour. When the signs and tours were concluded, we began our hike from the reserve to Rancho Bahía Escondida. The hike took approximately 5 hours; and we arrived ready for a well deserved rest. Unfortunately, the weather and the fact the many participants were quite tired prevented us from having our traditional campfire. Sunday morning we all participated in a cleanup of the Lake Catemaco beach, between Los Bajos de Mimiahua and Pozolapan. Many thanks to all of you who participated and supported this hike.
