CAMINATA "SALVEMOS AL LAGO DE CATEMACO" - 2007
(Hike "Save Lake Catemaco" - 2007)
OUR THIRD SUCCESSFUL HIKE
July 14 & 15
Friends of DEMATAC
Alex, Lulú, Luisa, Juan Carlos,
Reyna & José, Liliana, Yahaira,
Luis & Kevin.
34 ambitious hikers. DEMATAC ranks this year’s group as the most
tenacious and untiring. We are proudly satisfied with the results this
year; and can boast of it being a complete (well, almost complete) success.

The modification in the route of this year’s hike resulted in kudos from
those who participated in years past. We departed
Catemaco from 10:00
a. m. to 11:00 a. m. in groups by motor launch, headed for
Bahia
Escondida
, where several had breakfast. At 12:30 p. m. we left Bahia in a
light rain. We walked 4 hours to
Las Margaritas, where we spent the
night in the eco-tourism cabins. As always, we were received there with
friendly attention and excellent service.

After dinner a dissertation was given by the Sub-delegate of
PROFEPA,
Xalapa,
Lic. Hector Castillo, and Inspector de PROFEPA, Juan Raúl
Luna
. After the talk we sat around the traditional campfire and chatted,
remembering the rigors of the walk, resting, and awaiting the hour to
retire for the night. A few people returned to civilization that same
evening, but 61 of us remained.
Now compañeros, we await Caminata 2008. We ask for your suggestions and comments to improve the next hike, and we
hope that all of you participate next year – and invite your friends.

As always, you can communicate with me by telephone at (294) 943 0581 or by mail: jessie@dematac.org.

THANK YOU EVERYONE! DEMATAC will always remember you and appreciate your support, as will I.

Jessie
In the morning, after breakfast we hit the trail again with the destination
of
Catemaco and the offices of the Reserva de la Biosfera – Los Tuxtlas,
where our luggage awaited. At 5:15 p. m. we arrived - 33 hardy souls
achieved the goal, and with what little remaining energy we had left, we
posed for the photo in which the 33 victors are immortalized.

We thank very much all of those participants that traveled to join us from
Minatitlan, Cosoleacaque, Acayucan, Coatzacoalcos, Chinameca, Xalapa,
and Ciudad del Carmen. We thank our friends at
Las Cabañas in Las
Margaritas, Sacha Becker of Bahia Escondida, Ing. Antonio Azuara,
Director of the
Reserva de la Biosfera – Los Tuxlas – who though he
could not accompany us this year, supplied us with material and a support
vehicle. We also want to say thank you to Jorge Cáceres, Editor of the
“PLANETA” Diario del Istmo, and to Oscar Castelán for their help in the
publicity which generated so much interest in the Coatzacoalcos-Minatilan
area. And of course, thanks to the Sub-delegate of
PROFEPA Lic. Hector
Castillo
, and the Inspector, Juan Raúl Luna.

We appreciate enormously the help provided by Raymundo Hernández Ortíz and his assistant "Don Gringo" with the luggage
transportation. And many thanks to Francisco Gómez Marín (Paco) for his help transporting those who could not complete the
hike.

A final thank you to Barry Bragger and Stacey Caren of Torrington, Connecticut, U. S. A. for their generous economic support.
We hope that they can personally participate in the next
caminata.
